FINA Point Score and Australian Age Points
The FINA Points table below assigns point values to swimming performances, more points for world class performances typically 1000 or more and fewer points for slower performances.
The base times are defined each year, based on the latest World Record approved by FINA. For short course metres (SCM) the base times are defined with the cut of date of August 31st. For long course (LCM) the base times are defined at the end of the year (December 31st).

2011 Australian Age Pointscore (AAP) – at 13th August 2010

This pointscore gives an excellent comparison of times for age group swimmers of different ages and events.
Attached is the updated Australian Age Pointscore information for 2010-2011 for each age and stroke for boys and girls.
- 50 point times are the 10th alltime Australian best times at 30th June 2010.
- 40 point times are the 2011 Australian Age Qualifying Times for all events swum at the Australian Age Championships.
This sets every event for every age 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13/under at the same starting pointscore.
The AAP goes up from 50 by 1 point for each 1% faster than the 10th alltime time for each event.
Below 50 points, each point increment is 1/10 of the time difference between 50 and 40 point times. (ie between 10th alltime and 2011 Age QT).
It is considered that 1% increments are significant. Anything less than about 0.5% would not be a significant difference when comparing different strokes and different ages (FINA uses less than 0.1%).
The “swimmer of the meet” could be easily identified for age swimming.
Most winners at the Australian Age Championships are between 48 and 51 points.
Australian Age records range between 52 and 55 points.
These pointscores have been put into Team Manager standards, so that they can be incorporated into any TM report. The TM standards only allow 12 standards within the one set, so this has meant two sets have been produced for AAP.
Any states, districts or clubs that wish to try them out, may email twoodhouse3@bigpond.com for the TM standards.
The 2011 standards available for TM are:
AAP51x40 for 51 to 40 points for most times down to the 2011 Australian Age Qualifying Time.
AAP55x44 for 55 to 44 points is another TM time standard available – going up to 55 points, for exceptionally fast swimmers. Very few swims are above 51 points.
This year, only events that are swum at Australian Age Championships are included, and points only go down to the Australian Age qualifying standard.
Points for times below the Australian Age Qualifying times are no longer available.

Multi-Class point score (MCPS)
The MCPS has been developed to provide a simplified way for swimmers and coaches to measure and compare performances.
The 2010 MCPS replaces both the DIPS and MDST and will be used by Swimming Australia for JX, YPS, Paralympic Program Squad selection and Multi-Class events, providing a clearer path for classified swimmers.
