2012 OLYMPICS
LONDON, UK--Water has gone into the pool tanks of the aquatics center for the 2012 Olympics in London. The 3 pools of the complex (diving well, training pool, and competition pool) are being sequentially filled to test for water-tightness, prior to tile being laid in them. The organizers of the 2012 Games have released pictures of the facility with water in the training pool. The aquatics center is on-track to be finished by mid-2011.

LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND
In honour of today being Olympic Day (June 23), and due to last week's presentations to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by the 4 cities bidding to host the 2016 Olympics, below is a summary of the pool/aquatics plans of the 4 bidders. Last week's presentations to the IOC were designed as a briefing to the members in preparation for this October's IOC Session, where the 2016 Olympic host will be selected.
Chicago (USA)

A proposed 4-pool complex that would be built is among the plans for the South Shore Olympic Park venue cluster; open water is planned for the Olympic Waterfront cluster. The pool complex plans feature 2 50m pools (competition and training), with separate diving and water polo stadium pools. The open water races would take place in Lake Michigan, on a course parallel to, but away from, the shore.
Madrid (Spain)

The pool venue is an already under-construction aquatic center, begun in
2005 and expected to be completed in 2011. Open water events to be at the Getage Regatta Center, which will also host rowing and flatwater Canoe/Kayak. The Aquatics Center is located in the bid's Core Zone, while the open water venue is in the River Zone. Portions of the 4-pool Aquatics Center are to be temporary, but all 4-pools are to be under one roof.
Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)

An "Olympic Aquatics Stadium" is to be built, and permanent modifications are to be made to the existing Maria Lenk Aquatic Center.
For Open Water, a temporary venue on Copacabana is to be built, which will be shared with Triathlon. Swimming and synchro are to be contested at the Stadium; diving and water polo at the Lenk complex. The Lenk complex and Copacabana hosted the aquatics competitions at the 2007 Pan American Games, the former having been constructed for the Pan Ams. The Stadium and Lenk complex are located within the same venue cluster ("Barra"); while the Copacabana Beach venue is a second of Rio's 4 main areas of competition.
Tokyo (Japan)

The 2016 organizers in Tokyo plan to use the existing Tatsumi International Swimming Center, site of this year's Japan Championships and last month's Japan Open, to host aquatics, save the open water events, which will be held at Odaiba Marine Park. Both venues fall within the "Tokyo Bay" Zone of the bid--the water-side zone of Tokyo's 2 8km ovals.
